MASTERS NEWS
Keiji Mutoh announced that the next MASTERS show will be held on August 21st at the Korakuen Hall and that the main event will see a BATT (Bad Ass Translate Trading) revival.
The group was originally formed in early 2001 (NJPW), consisting of Hiroshi Hase, Shinjiro Otani, Taiyo Kea, and Done Frye, and ran for the next year until Mutoh left All Japan in 2002. The original ideals of the team was a group without boarders as Mutoh brought together Kea from All Japan, which they competed in both promotions together, and even Shinzaki from Michinoku Pro.
This will be the first MASTERS show that Mutoh himself cannot compete as he is still recouping after double knee replacement surgery earlier in the year. Though he announced that he plans to be in the corner of Shinjiro Otani, Jinsei Shinzaki, Taiyo Kea and Hiroshi Hase as they will be taking on a currently unannounced team. Mutoh seeks for the spirit of “pro wrestling love” to be flowing once more. Which Mutoh feels all four of these men are capable of bringing forth in his own absence from in the ring.
As for Mutoh himself, he added that his plan is still to return in the Spring of 2019, but at this time his training is still at a slow process. That he already suffered a previously mentioned set-back and he cannot afford anymore at this time.

Following the conclusion of the “DESTRUCTION” tour of shows this month, New Japan will now be focusing one of the last big shows of 2016 in “KING OF PRO-WRESTLING” on October 10 at the Ryogoku Kokugikan.
Of course the previously announced main event will feature Kazuchika Okada defending the IWGP Heavyweight belt against Naomichi Marufuji, Stemming form Marufuji claiming the upset win over the champion in the G1 CLIMAX in July.
As for the new matches, Kenny Omega will be putting up his “Tokyo Dome IWGP Challenge Rights” on the line against Hirooki Goto in the semi-final match of the night. Even though Goto originally lost to Omega at the final match of this years G1 CLIMAX, and how Omega won the rights, he has raised the challenge for a rematch that only can be fitting at the same hall that their original match took place.
Kyle O’Reilly will also be receiving the next challenge for the NEVER Openweight belt against Katsuyoshi Shibata. Shibata just defending the belt against O’Reilly’s partner Bobby Fish during the “DESTRUCTION” tour. Shibata is currently nursing on-going spine issues, but has stated that he will be a fighting champion. As it will take a lot for him to not be able to defend the belt.
Then an 8 man tag match has been set as the new IWGP Intercontinental Champion Tetsuya Naito teams with his fellow L.I.J. teammates in SANADA, EVIL, and BUSHI to take on Hiroshi Tanahashi, Michael Elgin, KUSHIDA, and ROH’s Jay Lethal. As Lethal is no longer a member of the L.I.J.
The Briscoe Brothers will be defending the IWGP Tag belts against another set of brothers in the “Guerrillas of Destiny” Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa. The challengers were champions in the past and this will mark their first challenge in 4 months. A rematch from the 6.19 “DOMINION” show in Osaka.
Then the IWGP Junior Tag belts will be in defense, as the “Young Bucks” defend against the team of Ricochet and David Finlay. This match coming about after Finlay was made Ricochet and Kojima’s partner for the NEVER 6 Man Tag belts due to Matt Sydal being unable to make it to the originally scheduled defense. Ricochet and Finlay have hit it off as a team as Finlay is hungry to breakout further in his career and Ricochet having on-going issues with the Young Bucks in general.
Then with Marufuji representing NOAH in the main event. A special 8 man tag match will be featured early on in the show as New Japan takes on NOAH. As the New Japan veteran team of Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Satoshi Kojima, Yuji Nagata & Manabu Nakanishi take on Go Shiozaki, Maybach Taniguchi, Katsuhiko Nakajima & Masa Kitamiya.
A special pre-show match match will be held in honor of Bushiroad’s revival of the Tiger Mask anime. As a maskman showdown will take place as Tiger Mask takes on Red Death Mask.
Before the big show though, New Japan will be holding “NEW JAPAN ROAD” on October 8 which will feature prelude’s to the following big event. Though a title match will be taking place as Kojima, Ricochet and Finaly will be defending the NEVER 6 Man Tag belts against the CHAOS Junior combination of Will Ospreay, Rocky Romero and Barreta in the semi-final match of the night.
The main event will feature Hiroshi Tanahashi, Michael Elgin, KUSHIDA & Jay Lethal taking on Tetsuya Naito, SANADA, EVIL & BUSHI. KUSHIDA of course is vying for a rematch for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight belt and Elgin is also aiming for a rematch for the IWGP Intercontinental belt. Which both match could be set for the “POWER STRUGGLE” event in November. Lethal will also be teaming with the New Japan regulars following his falling out with L.I.J. in August, so he could be looking to enact upon his own revenge as well.
Then a double prelude 8 man tag match will be held. As Goto teams with Tomohiro Ishii, and the IWGP Tag Champions Jay Briscoe and Mark Briscoe to take on Omega, Bad Luck Fale, and the challengers for the IWGP Tag belts Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa. Both sides will be looking for the early momentum heading into the following event, but it should make for a solid encounter nonetheless.
Captain New Japan will be changing his name to “BONE SOLDIER” following his betrayal on Yoshitatsu on 9/25. He will be debuting his new persona on the 10/8 show as the newest member of BULLET CLUB. Now the question remains as if this will be a career revival for him or if he will just end up being a “bullet” sponge for the group.
Pro Wrestling NOAH announced the full event cards for October tour, namely for the bigger shows that take place on 10/8 and 10/23 shows.
As it was previously announced for the 10/8 show, Naomichi Marufuji and Toru Yano will face Kazuchika Okada and YOSHI-HASHI. Though now it will be with the GHC Tag belts on the line. This will also be in prelude Marufuji’s IWGP Title challenge against Okada on October 10 at New Japan’s “KING OF PRO-WRESTLING”.
Though on the NOAH front Takashi Sugiura will be defending his GHC Heavyweight Championship against Katsuhiko Nakajima on October 23 at the big show in Yokohama. This follows Sugiura’s defense against, Nakajima’s former fellow DIAMOND RING/Kensuke Sasaki students, against Masa Kitamiya on 9/23. Nakajima came out after the match to assert himseld as a challenger against Sugiura which has now been made official. Nakajima last competed for the GHC belt earlier this year on 3/19 which Sugiura managed to win with the help of SZKG. It shall be interested to see how different Nakajima can tip the match in his favor given that the SZKG presence will still be looming over the match.
Then it was also announced that Yoshinobu Kanemaru will be receiving his rematch against Atsushi Kotoge for the GHC Junior Heavyweight Championship on 10/23 as well. Kotoge bested the former champion on the 9/23 show.
The full event card was announced for the October 2 show in Saitama. Which will feature two prelude matches for the newly announced W-1 Tag defense.
