[All Japan News] All Japan announced the first title matches to be held in the new year.
Following the show this past weekend the next set of title matches have been set in place as well as a Triple Crown contendership struggle.
The first title match announced for the new year will see a double Junior heavyweight showdown as a Hiroshi Yamato and Shuji Kondo will be putting their titles on the line against each other. Both men will walk in with their belts, but the victor shall walk out with both around their waist.
Manabu Soya was unable to defeat Masakatsu Funaki for the Triple Crown Champion, and so GET WILD is on nothing more than fumes at this time. Tokyo Sports awarded GET WILD as the team of 2012, but due to Soya’s loss against Funaki they will be forced to disband. Funaki though gave the reigning tag champions a challenge for the tag belts, which will see take place on January 2nd. Nothing is for certain to how GET WILD’s reign will be decided as the stipulation to the last title match was that GET WILD would be forced to disband, but a win over Funaki/Kono might give them the right to stay together while they are champions (just speculation).
The next day on January 3rd will see Seiya Sanada defending the GAORA TV title against Tomoaki Honma. Sanada has beaten every challenger thrown in front of him so far from the rising Yasufumi Nakanoueno to the dangerous power of Kazushi Miyamoto, but on the 3rd Sanada will face off against the other half of Tumeric Storm. Honma has been on a mission since re-appearing in All Japan and has become one of the biggest rulebreakers currently in the promotion. Not only will Sanada have to contend with Honma, but it can almost be certain that Miyamoto will try and create some sort of distraction to try and make sure the champion falls.
The Asia Tag belts will once again be decided between Junior Stars and Team 246. Both teams just recently faced each other in a solid match-up which saw Kanemoto get the win over Shuji Kondo. One might have expected that win would have gave a title shot against Kondo for the GHC Jr. belt, but Hayashi said that he wants one more shot against the champions. Their last match was pretty solid and the rematch should be nothing less than solid.
Then lastly, a title contendership match has been set in place to determine who will face Masakatsu Funaki for the Triple Crown title on January 26th. Following his win over Soya, Funaki once again showed that he is still the fighting champion. Following the match Akebono & Joe Doering came out to the ring to make the next bid to the champion and a #1 contender match has been set to take place on January 3rd. Akebono has had an up and down year in 2012 from facing off in a high profiled match against Atsushi Onita to his illness that could have sidelined him for good. Akebono has returned with the goal of become a title champion yet again. Joe Doering though is known for his mean streak as well as his super strength in the ring. Doering is no stranger to having to face Akebono in the ring and has managed to slam the big man on more than one occasion. This should be a solid match between 2 of All Japan’s big men, and no matter what Funaki may have one of the toughest matches later on in the month as he will be giving up a lot of size to both men.
