Following “INVASION ATTACK”, New Japan is now heading into the next tour of shows with “Wrestling Hinokuni” on 4/29 and “Wrestling Dontaku” on 5/3, both of the bigger events taking place during “Golden Week” in Japan.
First up, “Hinokuni” on 4/29 will feature three title defenses and two prelude matches heading into the following show.
The main event for “Hinokuni” was announced Kenny Omega will be making his first ever defense of the IWGP IC belt against the powerhouse Michael Elgin. Following the outcome of “INVASION ATTACK”, Omega and his crew were taking down a peg with the loss, but tempers flared between these two specifically with Omega taunting the bigger man. Elgin has been eager to get a singles shot at an IWGP belt and has been growing in popularity ever since his strong showing in last years G1 CLIMAX. Elgin could stand a chance in this match, but the three on one tactics that Omega shows with the Young Bucks at the wings could be the edge that he needs.
Hiroshi Tanahashi versus Bad Luck Fale has been setup following the last show after Fale attacked the newly crowned NEVER 6 Tag Champion. These two have traded losses in recent with Fale claiming the win over Tanahashi in the opening round of the “NEW JAPAN CUP” in early March and then Tanahashi pinning Fale in the close of an elimination match on 4/1. A grudge is definitely apparent between the two and this match could boast the winner into the next challenger slot for the IWGP Heavy belt.
Then the NEVER Openweight belt will be in defense as Katsuyori Shibata continues his recent trend in battle against the “Third Generation” veterans as he now takes on “Mr. Anti-Aging” Yuji Nagata. Shibata called out Nagata following his last defense of the belt as the champion looks to reclaim a previous loss against the challenger back in last years G1 CLIMAX. Nagata has not been in the single title hunt in a few years, especially in New Japan, but it always noted for his conditioning and ability for someone of his age, as he will be 48 by the time of this match. These two share similar styles and have always delivered a fierce confrontation in the past.
Then the last announced title match will see the IWGP Junior Tag belts in a rematch from “INVASION ATTACK” as the new champions “Roppongi Vice” Rocky Romero & Barreta take on the former champions in Ricochet and Matt Sydal. The new champions have formed a strong bond as of late and look to finally make a strong run with the belts, though the former champions look to get their revenge. New Japan noted that this match could set the tone of what it means to be an IWGP Jr. Tag Champion.
Then the last match announced will feature an all-out-war between L.I.J. (Los Ingobernables de Japon) and CHAOS. With the inclusion of the freelance SANADA (Seiya Sanada) now working alongside Tetsuya Naito, EVIL and BUSHI, whom he has a strong connection in the past with BUSHI specifically. L.I.J. is now poised more so than ever to be a strong unit in New Japan. The team will be taking on the next contender for Naito’s IWGP Heavy belt in Tomohiro Ishii, the former IWGP Champion Kazuchika Okada, Hirooki Goto, and Will Ospreay. L.I.J. aims to now conquer New Japan while CHAOS looks to reclaim their former position as the top faction in the promotion. This will mark the last major prelude match between Naito and Ishii before the title defense at “Wreslting Dontaku” on 5/3.
Below is the announced card at this time…
New Japan Pro Wresling “Wrestling Hinokuni 2016”, 4/29/2016 [Fri] 17:00 @ Grand Messe Kumamoto
(-) Special 8 Man Tag Match: Tomohiro Ishii, Kazuchika Okada, Hirooki Goto & Will Ospreay vs. Tetsuya Naito, SANADA [SP.E.], EVIL & BUSHI
(-) IWGP Jr. Tag Championship Match: [46th Champions] Rocky Romero & Barreta vs. [Challengers] Ricochet & Matt Sydal
~ 1st title defense.
(-) NEVER Openweight Championship Match: [10th Champion] Katsuyori Shibata vs. [Challenger] Yuji Nagata
~ 4th title defense.
(-) Special Single Match: Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Bad Luck Fale
(-) IWGP Intercontinental Championship Match: [13th Champion] Kenny Omega vs. [Challenger] Michael Elgin
~ 1st title defense.
The following “Hinokuni”, “Wrestling Dontaku” will then be held on 5/3 in Fukuoka.
The main event has been set and will feature the newly crowned IWGP Heavyweight Champion Tetsuya Naito taking on Tomohiro Ishii. This will mark the first time ever that Ishii has challenged for the leading belt in the promotion. Naito’s win over Okada has certainly placed CHAOS in a lower position as L.I.J. aims to take control over the promotion, something in-which CHAOS once did themselves. Ishii now stands with the task of vying to retain a sense of balance within the promotion otherwise L.I.J. road to conquering New Japan will truly be set if CHAOS once more suffers a direct fall in the main event. Will Naito remain “uncontrollable” or will the the challenger “Stone Pitbull” Ishii strike lighting in his pursuit to be a singles champion, let alone the leading role, once more.
Two “non-title” singles matches have also been scheduled for the show. First of which will see Kazuchika Okada taking on the invading Seiya Sanada who now is just listed as SANADA. The newest member of Los Ingobernables de Japon made a shocking appearance at “INVASION ATTACK”, living up title of the show it’s rightful name, and helped Naito in capturing the IWGP Heavyweight belt against the now former champion Okada. These two share a similar connection as well. As they both competed in TNA/IMPACT WRESTLING in the past, though with SANADA finding more success as a former X-DIVISION Champion. SANADA has honed his style based upon two former New Japan wrestlers in both Keiji Mutoh and Tatsumi Fujinami which should ultimately make him a perfect fit within the promotion. Though regardless of this Okada only has revenge on his mind as he strikes back against L.I.J.
Then Hirooki Goto and EVIL will once more face off in the ring. EVIL has been growing in his presence especially since their first encounter against one another back in November of last year. These two showed the most heat against one another at the “INVASION ATTACK” show and a singles match is now fitting as the L.I.J. versus CHAOS war is in full swing.
New IWGP Tag Champions were crowned at “INVASION ATTACK” as the brothers Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa “Guerrillas of Destiny” captured the belts from the now former champions “G.B.H.” Togi Makabe and Tomoaki Honma. A rematch has been set as the former champions look to recapture the belts now that they know what kind of formidable duo that they are facing. The challengers look to assert themselves as the veteran team while brothers aim to show how solid of a natural team that they are in the ring.
Then lastly, the IWGP Junior Heavyweight belt will be in defense as KUSHIDA takes on the veteran Jushin Thunder Liger. KUSHIDA’s one wish since becoming champion has been to compete against Liger and now that time has finally come. This match will be taking place in Liger’s hometown and is also being noted as the potential “final chapter” of the veteran’s 25+ year career. This will mark the first time that Liger has competed for the belt in roughly 6 years, last being in April of 2010. It has also been over 13 years since Liger last held the belt back in March of 2013. Liger has now become a legend of the junior world, though one last run of the belt has alluded him to this day. This match will be a long-time coming for Liger and KUSHIDA both. A true generation match is now set as one of the standouts of the current generation looks to inherit what it means to be a true junior heavyweight champion in the promotion.

Though he never directly trained by Saito himself, Kitamiya stated that he earned the consent of him to use the name. This year marks Kitamiya’s fifth year as a pro-wrestler and he wants to honor the veteran in the best way possible. The official signing ceremony took place for the upcoming GHC Junior Heavyweight Championship match as Yoshinobu Kanemaru defends against the next contender Hajime Ohara. Kanemaru has declared that he will retain against Ohara and has almost downplayed him as a challenger. Though Ohara stated that he should not be taken lightly as he was known a “Legend Killer” back in the days when he was trained by Ultimo Dragon.
