Biography
In 1997, Shibata competed om the National High School Greco-Roman 81kg Championship, though he was defeated by Shinsuke Nakamura in the second round.
Got his professional wrestling start in 1998 after passing the introductory test. He would choose to join NJPW rather than finishing up at the University in which he was attending.
It should be noted that Katsuyori is the son of Katsuhisa Shibata who is a former referee in NJPW, and even helped Katsuyori in beginning to want to be a wrestler.
Shibata would make pre-debut on March of 1998, but his official debut on October 10, 1999 against Wataru Inoue. Shibata would challenge the IWGP Junior Heavyweight belt against the then champion Kendo Kashin, this would mark the first notable showing from the young lion.
In April of 2000, Shibata would find himself on the wrong side of a tragedy as he would take part in the accidental death of Masakazu Fukuda. Who passed away due to a brain aneurism after taking a stiff shot from Shibata. It would later be proven that Fukuda should not have been allowed to compete as a blood clot was diagnosed as the reason why he had passed, something that could have been treated.
In April of 2002, he would make an excursion to Meixo where he would begin even more training, though it would be short as he would suffer an eye injury that would force him to return home that June. He would be out of action for a few months when he would return in November of 2002 and begin working against Hiroyoshi Tenzan.
He would soon after become a member of the Maki Club and began working as the masked Makai No.4. His style would also change as he would begin utilizing more kicks as well as he would be placed into the heavyweight class of New Japan.

On May 3, 2004, Katsuyori would make his MMA debut in K-1 against Musashi, but would suffer defeat via KO, following a high kick.

Katsuyori would officially announce his resignation from NJPW on January 31, 2005 and would then go on to compete in Big Mouth Loud that May.

November 5, 2005 would see the very first ever of teaming between Katsuyori & KENTA as he made his debut in Pro Wrestling Noah.

On August 12, 2012, Katsuyori would make his shocking return to NJPW as he and Kazushi Sakuraba appeared during the final day of the G1 CLIMAX. Katsuyori & Sakuraba made it known that they have come to fight.
