Below you will see a look back from the major events that happened in the year of 2014 in the land of the rising sun.
Keep in mind that I have not covered everything that has been posted throughout this year, but at the top of every month I have linked back to the archive for all the posts I that I have made for that specific time of this year. As well as links to the specific stories can be found right after the dates listed, if covered on the blogs. So be sure to double check there if you see an event or news that catches your attention. [1/1] ZERO1 – Kicked off the new year with a show at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo. Shinjiro Otani & KAMIKAZE were crowned the new champions vacant NWA Intercontinental Tag belts after defeating the team of Masato Tanaka & Yusaku Obata. The 29th World Heavyweight Champion James Raideen made his 3rd defense of the belt by defeating Daemon Ueda. HUB would also make his 2nd successful defense of the Junior 2 Crown belts by defeating Mineo Fujita. Hong Kong wrestler Jason Lee announced that he signed a 10 year contract with ZERO1.
[1/2] AJPW – All Japan held their first show of the year at the Korakuen Hall. Ultimo Dragon defended the World Junior belt against Atsushi Aoki for his first defense of the belt. Kento Miyahara officially announced that he joined All Japan as of the 1st of the new year.
[1/2] BJW – Held their first show of the year at the Korakuen Hall. Isami Kodaka defended his BJW Deathmatch Heavyweight belt against Takumi Tsukamoto. Koji Kanemoto would compete in his first singles match in BJW against Kazuki Hashimoto, in victory.
[1/3] NJPW – New Japan held their “Dai Pro-Wrestling Matsuri 2014 (Large Pro-Wrestling Festival 2014)” at the Differ Ariake in Tokyo before the big Tokyo Dome show the following day.
[1/3] AJPW – Akebono defended the Triple Crown against Takao Omori, for his 2nd defense. Masanobu Fuchi kicked off his 60th Birthday year as he teamed with Suwama and Taiyo Kea to take on the team of Jun Akiyama, Yoshinobu Kanemaru, and Masao Inoue. SUSHI also made his 1st successful defense of the GAORA TV belt as he defeated DDT’s Soma Takao.
[1/3] DDT – Held their 2,000 yen ticket show at the Korakuen Hall. HARASHIMA’s army would defeat Danshoku Dino’s Army in the main event. HARASHIMA would then compete against as he made his 2nd defense of the DDT EXTREME belt against Super Sasadango Machine. Minoru Suzuki then appeared to challenge Michael Nakazawa for the upcoming Ryogoku Kokugikan show on August 17th.
[1/4] NJPW – “WRESTLE KINGDOM 8” was held at the Tokyo Dome. Hiroshi Tanahashi would defeat Shinsuke Nakamura in the main event to defend the IWGP IC belt. Kazuchika Okada defeated Tetsuya Naito to retain the IWGP Heavyweight belt. Kota Ibushi defeated Prince Devitt to become the 67th IWGP Junior Champion. Hirooki Goto would defeat former classmate Katsuyori Shibata in a singles encounter. Togi Makabe would get a much needed singles win over Bad Luck Fale. Satoshi Kojima would become the NWA World Heavyweight Champion after defeating Rob Conway. Karl Anderson & Doc Gallows would become the 64th IWGP Tag Champions after defeating Lance Archer & Davey Boy Smith Jr.
[1/5] NJPW – Rob Conway & Jax Dane would defend the NWA Tag belts against Satoshi Kojima & Hiroyoshi Tenzan, keeping Kojima from becoming a double crown champion. El Desperado, the returning rookie Kyosuke Mikami, made his debut in New Japan with a win. Ryusuke Taguchi, who was injured at the time, announced that he would return in February.
[1/5] NOAH – Takeshi Morishima would defeat KENTA to become the 20th GHC Heavyweight Champion. After the match was the officially formation of Chokibogun with Maybach Taniguchi, and Michinoku Pro’s Kenou. Earlier in the event Yuji Nagata would claim a singles victory over Maybach. BJW’s Yuji Okabayashi made his debut for the first time in the NOAH ring. Daisuke Harada made it known that he wished to join the NO MERCY faction.
[1/9] TOKYO SPORTS AWARDS – The official award ceremony was held to honor the winners of the previous year.
[1/11] AJPW – Suwama & Jun Akiyama would team for the first time ever as they would go over Go Shiozaki & Kento Miyahara.
[1/12] NOAH – Chokibogun would compete for first time under their new group in victory. KENTA accepted Daisuke Harada into NO MERCY after the two faced in singles competition. Daisuke Sekimoto & Yuji Okabayashi would defeat the reigning GHC Tag Champions TMDK and earned another match this the belts on the line. That match was scheduled for 1/25.
[1/12] WRESTLE-1 – Manabu Soya appeared in W-1 as the next wrestler to have jumped ship. Though it was with mixed reactions as he previously stated he was with AJPW. Soya was given the new title of matchmaker in the promotion, as he was still not ready to compete after being injured the previous year. Masakatsu Funaki would also claim a KO victory over Yoshihiro Takayama.
[1/13] LEGEND – Tatsumi Fujinami teamed with his son LEONA for the first time. This also marked the first time a parent-child tag was formed in Japan. Riki Choshu would though not hold back on LEONA and took him out with a Riki Lariat. Tomohiro Ishii and Yuji Okabayashi would also compete in a very solid singles match.
[1/14] NJPW – “CMLL FANTASTICA MANIA 2014” kicked off their mini-tour at the BODYMAKER COLOSSEUM, 2nd Stadium in Osaka.
[1/16] ZERO1– Tama Williams became the 20th NWA UN Heavyweight Champion after defeating Zeus at the Shinkiba 1stRING.
[1/16] DRAGON GATE – Held a show at the Korakuen Hall. Masato Yoshino would defeat Masaaki Mochizuki in a nearly 30 minute match to retain the Open The Dream Gate belt.
[1/17] DDT – Daisuke Sasaki announced that he would be joining DDT Pro-Wrestling, while Hikaru Sato announced that he would be going completely freelance from the promotion. He would still compete for DDT when he was open to do so.
[1/18] BJW – Daisuke Sekimoto announced that he would have vacate the BJW World Strong Heavyweight belt due to having to undergo surgery on his right knee meniscus.
[1/22] BJW – The injuries keep racking up as Yuji Okabayashi stated that he suffered a rotator cuff injury following his match against Tomohiro Ishii. He announced that he would be unable to compete for potentially the rest of the year. Shinya Ishikawa and Ryuichi Kawakami were announced for the contenders to crown the new World Strong Heavyweight Champion.
[1/25] NOAH -Due to the injuries from the BJW wrestlers, Takeshi Morishima & Maybach Taniguchi would get the right to challenge for the belts in-which they would defeat TMDK to become the new champions. Morishima would become a 2 Crown GHC Champion.
[1/26] AJPW -Jun Akiyama & Yoshinobu Kanemaru would defeat the team of Kotaro Suzuki & Atsushi Aoki to become the 93rd Asia Tag Champions.
[1/26] DDT – HARASHIMA would make his 5th successful defense of the KO-D Openweight belt by defeating Shigehiro Irie. Kota Ibushi & Kenny Omega would becomes the 49th KO-D Tag Champions after defeating the former champions Isami Kodaka & Yuko Miyamto and Konosuke Takeshita & Tetsuya Endo in a 3WAY match.
[1/26] WRESTLE-1 – Held their 2014 public rookie audition. 3 hopefuls passed the initial tests to join the dojo system.
[1/27] AJPW -Masanobu Fuchi announced that he would be forced to miss the February tour as he undergoes cataract surgery.
[1/29] ZERO1 -Masato Tanaka’s new group known as the Dangan Yankees was formed on this day. It consisted of Yusaku Obata, Ikuto Hidaka, Fujita “Jr” Hayato & Daichi Hashimoto. As of Daichi he defeated BJW’s Kazuki Hashimoto to earn a shot at the NWA UN Heavyweight belt. This would be his first chance at a singles belt.
[1/30] WNC – TAJIRI would make his 4th defense of the WNC Championship after defeating KAZMA SAKAMOTO, who recently returned from competing in WWE/NXT.
[1/31] WRESTLE-1 – Minoru Tanaka held his first 20th anniversary match at the Korakeun Hall. He teamed with Koji Kanemoto, Yoshiaki Fujiwara & Jushin Thunder Liger to take on the DESPERADO team of Masayuki Kono, Ryoji Sai, KAZMA SAKAMOTO & Rene Dupree. Minoru would claim the win. K-DOJO’s Yuji Hino would begin to lay dominance in W-1 by taking out KAI in under 8 minutes. Masakatsu Funaki would also face the Brahman Brothers for first time in his career, in a handicap match. He would leave the victor.
[1/31] TAKA & Taichi Produce – Held their 4th ever show at the Shinjuku FACE in Tokyo. Both TAKA & Taichi would fall to Gedo & Jado in singles matches effectively forcing them to announce that the shows would be coming to an end. (…for the time being)
