Tomorrow Dragon Gate will have the first of two major shows that will feature several title defenses. This one, which will occur at the world famous Korakuen Hall, will feature a main event that many American fans are eagerly waiting for. Akira Tozawa will get his first Open the Dream Gate title shot against current champ Mochizuki Masaaki. Since his debut in Dragon Gate, Tozawa has always been seen as a rare failure for the Dragon Gate system. The third man to debut out of the DG dojo, Tozawa had mighty big shoes to follow in the form of fellow DG grads; BxB Hulk and Shingo Takagi. After basically becoming a comedy wrestler with the (insanely popular) Tozawa-juku, Tozawa was demoted to an opening match jobber due to constant reports of his bad attitude out of the ring. Due to this and his inept laziness, Tozawa was seen less and less on shows as his before mentioned DG dojo mates were challenging and winning titles in DG. In 2009 Tozawa decided to take a excursion in America where for almost two years he wrestled on several indy shows including ones in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla and Dragon Gate USA. It was there in PWG, with matches including former ROH/PWG star Chris Hero, that Tozawa started to catch on with the American indy crowd due to his wild puro style and unique charisma. It was this success that started hinting to the true potential that MANY thought Tozawa had but has yet to reveal itself. At the begining of 2011 Tozawa finally made his return to Dragon Gate Japan where he immediately made waves by joining Blood Warriors and attacking his former Kamikaze teammates; YAMATO and Shingo Takagi. After several victories over both men, Tozawa finally earned a Open the Dream Gate Title shot with Mochizuki.
Now will Tozawa win his first title in Dragon Gate? It would be nice BUT I highly doubt that would happen. Tozawa is popular with the Dragon Gate crowd since his return but not uber popular like Shingo or even BxB Hulk (and he has yet to win a singles title in DG) and I dont think the DG minds are willing to chance giving him the biggest prize in their fed. Besides as heels go in Blood Warriors, he isnt near the top of the food chain as CIMA is still the Blood Warriors leader and Doi is arguably the second in command. I do think though that Tozawa has matured and developed into a HUGE star that DESERVES to be the Dream Gate Champion somewhere down the line. So the BIGGER question is how will Tozawa look several months after his title shot? Will DG just drop pushing him completely? Or will they continue to build his momentum until they have no choice but to give him the Dream Gate title?
The rest of the card at Korakuen Hall is as follows (with my thoughts on some of the important matches)
10/13/11 Tokyo Korakuen Hall
0) Super SHenlong Vs Eita Kobayashi
0) K-Ness, Kenichiro Arai Vs Shisa Boy, Kotoka
1) Naruki Doi, Genki Horiguchi, Naoki Tanizaki Vs Rich Swann, Gamma, PAC
The ending of this match will more than likely involve Genki or PAC as it leads up to their Open the Brave Gate title match.
2) Yasushi Kanda, Tomahawk T.T. Vs Don Fujii, Super Shisa
3) BxB Hulk, Ryo Saito Vs Susumu Yokosuka, KAGETORA
4) Shingo Takagi Vs Brodie Lee
This has been billed as the “Strongest DG member” Vs the “Strongest DGUSA member”. Since coming to Japan, Brodie Lee has been booked as a monster, running over everyone. Now he will go one on one with the “strongest” man on the DG roster. In the recent past Shingo has been taking alot of falls (most recently to Akira Tozawa) and hasnt been nearly as strong since his Open the Dream Gate run in 2008 but I would be surprised if they put Brodie over him. IF they do give Brodie the win, one would think that would put him in line for at least a Open the Dream Gate shot.
5) CIMA, Ricochet, Cyber Kong Vs YAMATO, Masato Yoshino, Dragon Kid
Similar to the opening six man, this six man match finish will probably involve one of the four men involved in the Open the Twin Gate match several days later at Gate of Destiny. Though one should also look out for Kong and YAMATO as they are both involved in the big six way mask vs hair Steel Cage Escape match at the before mentioned PPV.
6) Open the Dream Gate Title Match: Masaaki Mochizuki (C) Vs Akira Tozawa
Three days later will be Dragon Gates big Gate of Destiny PPV which will have three title matches as well as a HUGE main event featuring six men, a cage and masks/hair on the line!!!!!
Gate of Destiny
10/16/11 Osaka, Osaka Prefectural Gym #1
1) K-Ness, Taku Iwasa, Kenichiro Arai Vs Super Shisa, Super Shenlong, Kotoka
2) Don Fujii, Hollywood Stalker Ichikawa, Yoshirio Takayama (FREE) Vs Yasushi Kanda, Brodie Lee, Metal Warrior
Back in July Yoshihiro Takayama made a surprise appearance due to a request from his BFF Stalker, where he laid to waste several members of Blood Warriors. Now the former Triple Title holder (he has held the major singles title in all three of the BIG feds in Japan; NJPW, AJPW and NOAH) will make his return to DG but this time he has to face the equally huge monster Brodie Lee. The interaction between those two alone is worth sitting through a Stalker match.
3) Ryo Saito Vs Rich Swann
4) Open the Triangle Gate Title Match w/ special stipulation that the champions only need a 2 count to win: Doi Darts (Naruki Doi, Naoki Tanizaki, Kzy) (C) Vs Masaaki Mochizuki, Susumu Yokosuka, Gamma
Mochizuki could be going after a second title (if he remains Open the Dream Gate champion after tomorrow) as he leads a team against the growing popular Doi Darts who just won these titles last month. Now this wouldnt be the first time a Triangle Gate team has failed in their first defense (out of 33 champion teams, 9 of them have done so) to make matters worst 4 of those 9 teams had Doi as a member…coincidence?
5) Open the Brave Gate Title Match: PAC (C) Vs Genki Horiguchi
After a brief hiatus, PAC has returned to Japan where he reclaimed his Brave Gate title (though he never really lost it) from Naoki Tanizaki. Now with business back to normal, PAC will defend his title against former two time Brave Gate Champion Genki Horiguchi. Now PAC has already defended the title longer than any previous champion (8 successful defenses) and this COULD be #9…depending if DG officially recognizes Naoki’s weird title reign. Genki on the other hand doesnt really need the Brave Gate title as he has already won it twice. Recently Genki’s Maraha Issappa tag partner Saito Ryo, claimed that if Genki doesnt win the Brave Gate, he will go after it. Even though this will be a step backwards for the former Dream Gate and one time Ace of Dragon Gate, I think a PAC/Saito Ryo feud would be intresting compared to anything Genki could generate if he won the belt.
6) Open the Twin Gate Title Match: CIMA, Ricochet (C) Vs Masato Yoshino, Dragon Kid
This will be the second title defense for Team Mohawks. Interestingly enough this will be the second time that they will have faced the challenging team of Yoshino and Kid but NOT as a team. CIMA and Ricochet defeated Dragon Kid and PAC for the Twin Gate titles and then defended the titles against PAC and Yoshino. So MAYBE the weak point is PAC? Or maybe Team Mohawk will continue to roll as the dominant tag team in Dragon Gate?
7) Mask Vs Hair Steel Cage Survival 6 Way Match: Akira Tozawa Vs BxB Hulk Vs Cyber Kong Vs YAMATO Vs Shingo Takagi Vs KAGETORA
Dragon Gate has been known for several of their marquee matches (ie the six man tag, the Naniwa Style Elimination match, etc) but really none can top the excitement and intrigue of the six man Cage Survival match!! Its been nearly 10 years since the very first legendary one (find it if you can, its amazing!) and almost two years ago since the last one (which surprisingly saw Yoshino get his head shaved). This time around we have six men who are all involved with each other in some way: possible Dream Gate Champion Akira Tozawa has been feuding with former Kamikaze teammates YAMATO and Shingo since his return to Japan, while BxB Hulk has had a looong history with Shingo since they both debuted in Dragon Gate back in 2005 (also BxB lost a hair vs hair match to Shingo back in July 2010). Recently Cyber Kong has been feuding with KAGETORA which has lead to several pull apart brawls. I would try to predict a winner but Dragon Gate has always done a good job in picking the unexpected to lose their hair/mask (who honestly thought either Yoshino OR BxB would ever get shaved?!) So im just going to predict that this match will get MOTYC marks!
